SEO FAQs

What is Search Engine Friendly Design?

Search engine friendly design is the use of methods and best practices that result in a website that is easy for the search engines to read and index.

Search engines can have problems with the following technologies:

  • Flash animation
  • Java Scripts
  • PHP or data base driven content has the potential to produce hard to index content and 'unfriendly urls'. Note that proper design can avoid these issues while still using the same technology
  • Poison words and stop words which may cause your site to be penalized for inappropriate content
  • Many engines and directories penalize 'automated submissions' - use of them must be carefully considered to ensure success

Do Search Engines Still Use ‘Meta Tags’?

Meta Tags are keywords and other tags included in web page's code which do not appear on the actual page.

It is true that there has been a move away from their importance in rankings in favor of 'on page content' i.e. the search engines give more significance to text which actually appears on the page.

However there's never any harm in including well formed, relevant meta tags and they still produce certain benefits when used correctly.

What is ‘Black Hat’ SEO?

Black hat optimization is the unscrupulous use of 'tricks' in an attempt to get high SERPs. These tricks can include things such as hiding white text on white background, overuse of keywords and the use of 'link farms' - sites with little use for humans used purely to give the search engines the impression that the site is more popular in the human sphere than it actually is.

Search engine strategists are engaged in an ongoing battle to identify and render ineffective, sometimes penalizing offending sites.

Why is My Site not Ranking Well in the Search Engines?

A common concern - a complex issue which involves offline factors such as the size of the company. However, some common causes are:

  • Your website may not be properly search engine optimized
  • Your site may not be readable by the engines
  • Your site might be missing information critical to properly index your webpage
  • Use of some scripts/technologies can prevent search engine spiders or bots from crawling your web site and reading its content
  • Your site may been banned or penalized by the Search engines for using black hat techniques

What is Organic SEO?

Organic SEO (sometimes called 'natural' SEO) is the process of optimizing a website so that it obtains good search engine placements (SERPs) independently of any paid inclusions, PPC (pay per click) advertising. Proper organic SEO also excludes 'black hat SEO' - i.e. unscrupulous techniques used to 'fool' the search engines.

What is Search Engine Optimization or SEO?
