September Song
September finds me pointing my company in the direction of social media management and away from straight web design and development. The time seems right – dealing with the minutiae of a website’s design can sometimes feel like arranging the deckchairs on the Titanic in the current anxious financial climate. This was brought home to me when discussing ‘drag and drop’ shopping carts with someone who viewed them as a great sales multiplier. I don’t want to bore you with the technicalities, but drag and drop is bad news at the moment, costs wise, because the mechanism of it is very different for touch screen devices compared to more traditional mouse driven setups. Getting it to work on both platforms would be a major exercise – a small project in itself, and frankly the hope that people would buy a lot more things just because they could drag them into a cart (as opposed to just clicking ‘add to cart’) seemed forlorn to me.
The design of a site is important, but mostly things need to reach a certain level of professionalism and to have a style which fits into the business niche, whether it’s a gaming site aimed at girls or a survival foods site aimed at mountain men. For the small business especially dropping lots of money on designs for web sites is wasted… and most of my clients are small businesses! The rise of social media, with it’s muliplicity of web access points – along with the ‘company website’ there’s the Facebook page, Twitter feed, YouTube videos etc and the maximum bang for buck marketing has now shifted to social media.
I’m excited about being able to draw on the years of experience building up my own social presence while promoting my web design and development business. It became the kind of work that I came to love the best and I’m really looking forward to using some supercharged techniques to deliver amazing returns for my new clients!
